In May of 2006, The BLS (Bureau of Labor Statistics) reports average salary/wage earnings of both mechanics and auto service techs to be $16.00. The middle percent between $11.50 and $21.50, the lower to earn less than $9.00 and the highest to earn more than $27.00 per hour.
In addition to their regular salary, a number of experienced automotive technicians will receive a commission based on the labor charge to each customer. Therefore, earnings may vary depending on the amount of work completed. Commissioned techs most often receive a minimum weekly salary if they have chosen to work on a commission plus basis.
