This generally involves a rotating schedule of six to twelve week periods of class attendance, followed by an equal period of time working within the sponsoring dealership's service departments. Within the dealerships, each student is assigned an experienced automotive worker who provides the hands-on instruction.

Experienced Automotive Technicians attend manufacturers training centers to receive updated training on certain components such as air-conditioners, and electronic fuel injection systems. Experienced technicians or new employees who show promise, may take additional technical training programs sponsored by the auto manufacturers. In addition, a number of automotive shops have factory representatives visiting to provide on-site training sessions.

In May of 2006, The BLS (Bureau of Labor Statistics) reports average salary/wage earnings of both mechanics and auto service techs to be $16.00. The middle percent between $11.50 and $21.50, the lower to earn less than $9.00 and the highest to earn more than $27.00 per hour.

In addition to their regular salary, a number of experienced automotive technicians will receive a commission based on the labor charge to each customer. Therefore, earnings may vary depending on the amount of work completed. Commissioned techs most often receive a minimum weekly salary if they have chosen to work on a commission plus basis.
