- Licensing for a Land Surveyor - A license is required in all 50 States and all US territories. In the majority of cases, the State licensing boards require each prospective surveyor to successfully complete a written examination. This exam is given by the NCEES, National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying. Additionally, most of the states do have a requirement of a passed written exam as prepared by the licensing board of the State.

Regardless of the previous experience, some states do have a requirement of a bachelor degree in surveying, or a related industry such as forestry or civil engineering. Average earnings of mapping and surveying techs was $32,000, with the middle percent earning between $25,000 and $42,000, the lowest percent under $20,000 and the highest 10 percent earning more than $53,000. Average earnings of mapping technicians and surveyors working within engineering and architectural fields were $30,500 and $37,500 if working within the local government.
