A high school diploma or equivalent is typically needed for entry, even though some programs may accept candidates with no diploma, and some programs are integrated into a high school curriculum. Many year-long practical nursing programs encompass supervised clinical practice (patient care) and classroom learning. Classroom study involves general nursing concepts and subjects associated with patient care, including medical-surgical nursing, pediatrics, anatomy, physiology, psychiatric nursing, the administration of drugs, obstetrics, first aid and nutrition. Clinical practice is typically in a hospital setting but often occurs in other settings. LPNs must be sympathetic and caring. Since working with the injured and sick people can be stressful, LPNs should be emotionally stable. They must also be observant, and have excellent communication and decision-making skills. As an integral part of a health care team, LPNs must have the ability to work well with supervisors and follow directions. LPNs held approximately 749,000 jobs in 2006. Nearly 26 percent worked in nursing care facilities, 26 percent of LPNs were employed by hospitals, and another 12 percent had jobs in physicians’ offices. Others held jobs in Federal, State, and local government agencies; employment services; outpatient care centers; home health care services; residential care facilities; and community care facilities for the elderly. Approximately 19 percent worked part time. LPN jobs are expected to increase 14 percent between 2006 and 2016, faster than average for all careers, due to the increase in long-term care requirements of an aging population and the normal increase in need for health care services.
