A supervised internship is required for certification and can be finished in one of two different ways. The first states that a completed program must be accredited by the Commission on Dietetic Registration. As of 2007, there were 53 accredited programs that combined academic and supervised work experience and usually lasted 4 to 5 years. The second option requires the completion of 900 hours of supervised work experience in any of 265 different accredited internships. These accredited internships may be full-time programs that last 6 to 12 months or part-time programs that last 2 years.

In 2006, nutritionists and Dieticians held about 57,000 jobs. More than half of all these jobs were in nursing care facilities, outpatient care centers, hospitals, or offices of physicians and other health practitioners. Many nutritionists and dietitians had jobs in special food services, an industry comprised of companies providing contract food services to facilities such as airlines, correctional facilities, colleges and universities, and company cafeterias.

In May 2006, the Bureau of Labor Statistics, U.S. Department of Labor reported the average annual incomes of nutritionists and dietitians were $46,900. The middle 50 percent made between $38,500 and $57,000. The bottom 10 percent made less than $29,750, and the top 10 percent made more than $68,250.
According to the American Dietetic Association, average annual wages for registered dietitians in 2005 differed by practice area as follows: $53,750 in consultation and business; $60,000 in food and nutrition management; $60,200 in education and research; $48,800 in clinical nutrition/ambulatory care; $50,000 in clinical nutrition/long-term care; $44,750 in community nutrition; and $45,000 in clinical nutrition/acute care.
